Wenham designates as Purple Heart Community
Select Board · Meeting of April 14, 2026
Wenham designates as Purple Heart Community and approves park restroom. The Select Board unanimously adopted the town's Purple Heart Community designation, honoring approximately 10 recipients with ties to Wenham, including Alan B. Cheeseman, killed in Vietnam in 1970, with a flag-raising planned for August 7.
The Board also unanimously approved resident Lori Heil's request for a citizen-funded portable toilet at West Wenham Park at approximately $1,590 for six months (May 1 through August 31, 2026), conditioned on proof of private funding and weekly cleaning costs. Additionally, the Board selected Barrett Planning Group to update the town's Historic District Guidelines, unchanged since the late 1990s.
