Wenham Special Town Meeting Adjourns Early After Gym Exceeds Capacity

WENHAM — June 9, 2025 — Wenham's Special Town Meeting adjourned after a single vote Monday when a record turnout overwhelmed the middle school gym. Town Moderator Roger Smircich, citing Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 39, Section 10, consulted with the Select Board and adjourned the meeting at Article 5 to Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at Gordon College's Benning Center, after police and fire personnel determined the venue was beyond capacity. Before the adjournment, town meeting approved a four-article consent calendar — covering local acceptance of state compensation statutes for the collector, treasurer, clerk, town clerk, and assessor — by a vote of 458 to 98, with Finance and Advisory Committee Chair Finn Sprague recommending favorable action. Nine of the warrant's 13 articles remain to be decided. The 556 electronic votes cast on the consent calendar alone indicate attendance well above the 120-voter quorum requirement.
